Bonner County accepts state grants to repower patrol boat and improve Garfield Bay launch

Lieutenant Megeechee of the Bonner County Sheriff's Office asked the board to accept two WIF grants from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The first grant would repower patrol vessel Marine 6: a $75,000 project with $50,000 covered by the grant and a $25,000 county match. "We run these engines to about 4,000 hours... a rebuild engine... we might get four or five years out of it," Megeechee said in explaining why replacing the engine may be preferable to rebuilding.
The second grant would fund improvements at the Garfield Bay boat launch. The sheriff's office estimated the project at about $150,000, with $125,000 covered by the grant and $25,000 from the county. Megeechee described a proposed breakwater of pilings and horizontal slats and a 20-foot dock extension to protect a county slip and provide additional public dock space. "I think this gets us where we want to be with a much more reasonable cost," he said, noting prior storm damage to county vessels.
Commissioners asked questions about prior project discussions and costs; auditing, legal and risk had approved the Garfield Bay grant and verified available funds in the sheriff's budget. The board voted to accept both grants and authorized the chair to sign the grant-agreement documents.
