Audit shows no deficiencies; board approves $470,547.71 in bills and accepts community grants

Colette Greene of Summers, Spencer & Company Advisors presented the district’s 2023–24 audit on March 10 and told the board that no deficiencies were found.
Following the audit presentation, the board approved the consent agenda, which included February financial reports and payment of bills totaling $470,547.71. Cynthia Edgerle moved to approve the consent agenda; Jake Svaty seconded and the motion passed 6-0.
The board accepted gifts and grants including $100 from Meredith Vargo and $100 from the Lew McAtee Memorial for the EES library and a $50 contribution to Bearcat Assist. Randi Nienke of the Caring Families Foundation thanked teachers and students for helping distribute more than 130 pieces of artwork to several local senior-care facilities, saying, “Together, we make and distribute over 130 pieces of artwork at least 4 times a year.”
The board also recognized several student accomplishments: Willa Finnegan was named champion of the Ellsworth County Spelling Bee and will advance to the state competition; the high-school Scholars Bowl team and participants in the Grow Ellsworth Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge were celebrated. The entrepreneurship contest awarded $3,000 in prize money among first, second and third place winners.
Policy updates were presented for a first reading; the board will act on those policies at the April meeting. The audit and the unanimous vote on bills and gifts emphasize the district’s routine fiscal oversight and community partnerships.
