Lumberport council approves routine business, adopts Region 6 hazard plan and schedules free dump day

The Lumberport Town Council on Sept. 9 approved a series of routine administrative and public‑safety actions, including accepting applications for a city clerk and water clerk, renewing a support contract, approving a check‑scanner purchase, scheduling a free dump day and adopting the Region 6 Hazard Plan needed to pursue certain funding for building condemnation and demolition work.
Council members voted, typically by unanimous recorded tallies, to accept staffing applications (city clerk and water clerk), accept applications for community building cleaning staff and renew a support contract with JayHawk for $725 through Sept. 2025. The council also approved purchase of a check scanner with assistance from Connie at WesBanco and authorized a free dump day on Sept. 28 (with a $3 tire disposal fee).
The council adopted the Region 6 Hazard Plan and noted that adoption is necessary for funding related to condemning unsafe structures; staff discussed checking for asbestos before demolition. Town Inspector Randall Jaggie flagged problem properties and noted available DEP grant assistance; Code Enforcer Jaggie was instructed to follow up with homeowner Holly Berrish on a property issue recorded during public comment.
Other business included acceptances of the police and public works reports, approval of financial payments and the council's acceptance of the resignation of Brenda Stark effective Aug. 26, 2024. The council also heard an update that a proposed Recovery Center in the old high school is on hold because the state requires a sprinkler system before occupancy.
The meeting closed after the council approved adjournment. Most motions were moved, seconded and recorded with a 5–0 vote where noted.
