Metuchen board welcomes six new hires and two student board members

The Metuchen Board of Education used part of its July 21 meeting to introduce six new hires approved at prior meetings and to welcome two student board members.
Superintendent Doctor Caputo introduced the hires and asked each to say a few words. Anthony Calvano, who will teach fifth grade at Campbell Elementary, said he returned to school during COVID to earn a master's degree and is excited to teach higher-level math and science. Michael Harris, the new PE and health teacher at Campbell, said this will be his first full-time PE role and that he's eager to coach and contribute to the district's athletics programs. Sean Huber will serve as a leave-replacement English teacher at the high school and said he's glad to return to the high-school setting. Jennifer Pascual returned to the district as an LDTC at Campbell, Rebecca Rivera will teach computer science and STEM at Edgar Middle School, and Matthew Simon will serve as a special-education teacher at Campbell.
Doctor Caputo also introduced two student board members, Jocelyn Branch and James Casey, both rising seniors at Metuchen High School. Branch described herself as active in sports and the community and said she's excited to represent students; Casey, a member of the school newspaper and soccer team, said AP score results were encouraging and noted upcoming orientation for freshmen.
The board welcomed the new staff and student members and recessed portions of the public-comment period to allow new hires to continue preparing for the school year.
