Assistant Chief O'Dell told the commission that the department’s service dog, Mythos, was found unresponsive in a patrol vehicle and that preliminary findings point to heat exposure as the cause. The department requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) to conduct an independent third-party investigation, O'Dell said, and pledged full cooperation.
O'Dell said the department activated its peer-support team and is providing information about the city's employee-assistance program to impacted officers. He also said the department is considering a critical-incident debrief, which is a standard practice after traumatic calls and events.
O'Dell said he was limited in what he could share while the independent inquiry is pending and that he would provide further information in subsequent meetings as the investigation proceeds.
