Cass County supervisors set annual pay for deputies, clerks and jail administrator; Richter records lone nay on some votes

The Cass County Board of Supervisors on June 16 certified multiple salary and wage schedules for county employees and deputies while recording a lone dissent on several motions.
Under motions brought to the board, supervisors certified annual base salaries for deputies appointed by elected officials under Iowa Code 331.904(1)(a). That motion passed with Supervisors Green, Pettinger, Baier and O’Brien voting aye and Supervisor Wendy Richter voting nay. The minutes list individual positions and rates, including Deputy Auditor Hannah Richter at $58,067 and several deputy treasurer and recorder positions at $64,209.
The board separately approved the annual base salaries for deputy sheriffs classified as exempt under Iowa Code 331.904(2)(c). That motion carried with all ayes; listed salaries include Chief Sheriff Deputy Spencer Walton at $99,025 and Sheriff Sergeant Joshua McLaren at $90,870.
Supervisors also set wages for deputy sheriffs classified as nonexempt, consistent with the union agreement and statutory authority; this motion carried unanimously. Examples recorded in the minutes include Deputy Investigator Benjamin Bartholomew at $87,375 and multiple deputy sheriff positions at $82,715 per year.
Supervisor Pettinger moved, and Supervisor O’Brien seconded, to set compensation for extra help and clerks appointed by principal county officers under Iowa Code 331.904(4). That motion passed with Green, Pettinger, Baier and O’Brien voting aye and Richter recording a nay. The minutes include a multi-page roster of extra-help and clerk positions with hourly or annual pay rates.
The board also set the annual salary for the Jail Administrator (Spencer Walton) as recorded in the minutes; that motion carried with all ayes.
