The City of Franklin Personnel Committee voted July 20 to forward an updated sewer and water technician job description to the common council with the committee’s recommendation.
Staff said the job description had not been updated in more than 20 years and proposed two substantive changes: replace references to the former Department of Commerce with the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), and remove a line about routine use of “toxic or caustic” chemicals such as chlorine because the city no longer uses it. "The job description in question is the sewer and water technician, has not been updated in over 20 years," said Blake Weiding. He added that if operational needs require reintroducing chlorine in the future, the item would be brought back to the committee.
The presenter also said administrative details near the top of the document—including the reporting line and grade level—are subject to revision and will be finalized with department leadership. He said he and Glenn Beardsley, head of sewer and water, would prepare the final language before the council review.
Committee member discussion focused on clarifying the reporting line and ensuring the document reflects current legal oversight. Following discussion, a committee member moved to forward the updated job description to the common council; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
