The Box Elder County Commission approved a series of indigent defense contracts and grant agreements after a brief presentation from Michael McGinnis and county staff.
McGinnis told commissioners the Indigent Defense Commission continued the county's grants from last year and that the county "didn't lose any grants," which staff described as positive given state funding uncertainties. The specific approvals included Indigent Defense Commission grant agreement 26-34 (county acceptance of the grant) and county agreements 26-35 through 26-40 to contract with named public defenders and legal assistant positions for district, juvenile, justice and drug-court responsibilities.
A county staff member noted the grant fiscal year does not align with the county's calendar-year budget and that the difference will require the commission to increase appropriations in December by about $3,000 to cover contract increases.
Commissioner Bingham moved and Commissioner Perry seconded each agreement; all were approved by voice vote.
