Metcalfe County Board hears updates on strategic plan, athletics complex and school activities

At the March 11 meeting the Metcalfe County Board of Education heard status reports from Superintendent Josh Hurt and school leaders on the district's strategic planning process, facility work and school activities.
Superintendent Josh Hurt said district leaders met with Studer Education and community representatives to refine the district's vision, mission and values; he said one more meeting with Studer is planned before a final draft of the strategic plan is presented to the board for approval. Hurt also reported that construction crews are making progress on the new athletics complex ' "really looking nice at the top of the hill," according to the minutes ' and that the board is working with principals on allocations, staffing and salaries for the 2025-26 school year.
Matt Shirley (Facilities/Digital Learning) provided details on the athletics complex: bleachers are being installed and expected to be finished in a few weeks, the press box was scheduled to be lifted into place later in the week, a misspelled scoreboard label is being replaced, and fencing, roofing and dirt work are resuming. Michael Gill (MCES) highlighted recent academic recognition (Madi Osbon earned third place in the region for Arts & Humanities) and announced Literacy Night (March 20), Book Fair, Open Enrollment for preschool and kindergarten (March 26), and several field trips.
Joseph Eaton (MCHS) reported on athletics and student events: the girls' basketball team finished as regional runners-up, several students and coaches received regional honors, ACT testing schedules were discussed, and upcoming events include the DanceBlue Mini Marathon on March 14 and Spring Meet the Hornets on March 16. Jenny Stotts outlined MCMS's deeper learning case study with the Aurora Institute and an Exhibition Night showcase on March 26. Torrie Osbon (PR/Grants) said the district applied for seven AEDs in a KDE grant and for two $5,000 grants for graphing calculators; the district expects a 21st Century grant award notification on March 28.
The board also recognized employees and a student of the month (Payton Morgan, noted as not present) and congratulated the MCHS Lady Hornet basketball team for reaching the 4th Region final. No public comment was recorded at the meeting.
