Newton County proclaims support for Memory Cafe; Dr. Lakeisha Izzard honored

The Newton County Board of Commissioners honored Dr. Lakeisha Izzard with a proclamation on July 21, praising her work as an educator, counselor and behavioral-health advocate and recognizing the seventh annual Black Men Thrive Symposium.
Executive Assistant Latonya Hamp read the proclamation and asked Dr. Izzard to speak; Dr. Izzard told the board she is proud to be a Newton County resident and described the importance of partnerships with local organizations. Commissioner Mason and others spoke in praise of her leadership and the board posed for a photograph.
Separately, county staff and Memory Cafe volunteers described a new Memory Cafe pilot at the Senior Enrichment Center. The program meets every fourth Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and combines recreational activities and caregiver support. Speakers said activities such as music and dancing provide cognitive stimulation and respite for caregivers while fostering social connection among participants.
Organizers invited volunteers and residents to participate; staff and volunteers said similar programs have reduced caregiver isolation and helped attendees re-engage emotionally through music and activity.
