Superintendent reports on graduation schedule, testing gains, grants and summer feeding

Superintendent Josh Hurt and district staff told the board that graduation events are set, middle-school i-Ready scores improved from fall to spring, the district won a $490,000 21st Century grant, and more than 680 students are registered for the Summer Feeding Program.
Superintendent Josh Hurt and district administrators updated the Metcalfe County Board of Education May 13 on end'of'year events, assessment results, summer food programs and awarded grants.
Hurt said the Class of 2025 is counting down to graduation and listed key dates: Baccalaureate on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., Senior Breakfast on Monday, graduation practice and photos May 20, and commencement on May 23 at 7:00 p.m. "Metcalfe County is blessed with incredible educators," Hurt said, and he noted the district held Teacher Appreciation Week activities and attended a proclamation signing by Judge-Executive Larry Wilson and Mayor Doug Smith recognizing May as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month.
At the elementary level, Michael Gill reported outreach events including a Ring the Bell for Literacy with the Metcalfe County Public Library and upcoming preschool, kindergarten and 5th-grade ceremonies. MCMS principal Jenny Stotts reported spring i-Ready gains: 24% of middle-school students at/above grade level in math (an 11-point increase from fall) and 39% at/above grade in reading (a 15-point increase). Stotts credited RTI and intervention efforts for the improvements.
Joseph Eaton summarized senior schedules and extracurricular achievements at MCHS, including band participation and agriculture activities. Two students were noted for regional recognition; some students are preparing for a European music tour.
District staff also outlined summer and grant programs. Torrie Osbon said the district received a 21st Century afterschool continuation grant for the middle school worth $490,000 over a five-year cycle. Karen Blythe described the Summer EBT program as targeted to qualifying students (cards loaded automatically) and said more than 680 students are registered for the Summer Feeding Program, with pickups every Monday from June 2 through July 28. The district received a Summer Boost Grant to provide free literacy and math materials to program participants.
Facilities and operations updates included a change order to address drain issues on the athletic-complex project and a note that substantial completion is expected July 1. Staff also said the district will replace its all-call system with Messages XR in July and is reviewing Senate Bill 181 for potential impacts on staff-student communications.
The board heard these reports as part of its regular business and took no separate action beyond the approval of related consent and action items later in the meeting.
