CERT trainers ask Goddard residents to sign up for June 19–21 disaster‑response course

Dr. Julie Stimpson (S8), introduced by the city manager, described CERT as neighborhood disaster training that teaches fire safety, utility shutoffs, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and disaster psychology. "Community emergency response is pretty much helping neighbors helping neighbors," Stimpson said, summarizing the program’s core concept. She said the class is organized as a public session across three days and that registrants receive a starter preparedness backpack with basic safety gear.
Stimpson noted 38 people had signed up systemwide for upcoming CERT offerings but only six registrants were from Goddard; she encouraged local residents to use the QR code on the flyer to register and invited anyone to observe sessions if they could not attend the full weekend. Randy Rayner (S11) described advanced-team functions, background checks and auxiliary communications options that can operate when cellular or internet systems are down.
Council asked how the city would track trained volunteers; presenters said they do not provide a routine roster on request but identified trained volunteers by marked vests and color distinctions for advanced-team members.
What’s next: Trainers invited council and residents to the June 19–21 sessions and said staff would follow up on integrating CERT into the city’s emergency operations planning.
