Summer grants let Grants Pass expand kinder camp and run new Literacy Quest with measurable reading gains

District staff reported to the Parent Advisory Council that a late state allocation for summer programs allowed expanded offerings this year, including two-week kinder camps and a new five-week Literacy Quest focused on foundational reading skills.
The presenter said the expanded kinder camp served 72 incoming kindergartners and gave teachers extra time to observe and plan supports. Literacy Quest, hosted at Riverside, enrolled 65 students (mostly rising third-graders) and met grant requirements for 80 contact hours; staff reported an average increase of about 10 words correct per minute on the relevant benchmark measure, with some individual students gaining about 25 words per minute.
Staff said they partnered with Boys & Girls Club and Options for Southern Oregon to provide skills trainers at elementary camps, provided transportation and onsite lunches, and used a mix of grant, student-investment-account and general-fund dollars for programming. At secondary levels, credit-bearing online and in-person courses served 118 students for credit retrieval, though some career-academy and transition offerings struggled with recruitment.
The presenter praised staff who led the programs and said the district will track participation and outcomes and report additional data to the council in future meetings.
