High-school students presented to the board about a recent three-day Seattle field trip that combined lab work, research demonstrations and cultural experiences. Teacher Mr. Shaw introduced Clara, Ben and Noah (students) and the students took turns describing visits to the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center (gel electrophoresis lab work), the Allen Institute (hands-on CRISPR activities) and a UW Bothell lab that covered facial reconstruction methods.
Students described hands-on techniques: pipetting and gel electrophoresis to identify gene fragments and observing CRISPR-based DNA cutting demonstrations. Mr. Shaw thanked the Ben Sarafin Fund and community donors for making the trip possible and emphasized the educational and cultural value of the experience.
Board members and the superintendent praised the students' presentations and the district for facilitating experiential STEM learning.
