Chairman: Gasarama site remediated; board notes NJDEP notice for redevelopment near Hampton Diner; resident raises deer, tick concerns

At the July 21 meeting Chairman Dave Hansen told the Board of Health that the Gasarama of Newton LLC site has been remediated and that remediation records were submitted to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Hansen also described a NJDEP letter and an application for land-use authorization regarding a redevelopment proposal for the former Audi building adjacent to the Hampton Diner. The minutes say the proposal would include a Taco Bell and a Popeyes, and that the township received the NJDEP notice because the site is within 200 feet; a full copy of the application is on file with the township clerk.
During the public session, resident Rosemary Lawrey of 314 Lakewood Terrace told the board she believes an abundance of deer in her neighborhood is causing illness through droppings, ticks and chigger bites and asked whether the town could act. Chairman Hansen said the town's budget is tight, suggested the Clearview Lake Association might conduct a neighborhood hunt and recommended pest-control services, and said he would raise the concern at the next Township Committee meeting while noting legal and safety limits on municipal wildlife control.
A motion to adjourn was made by Ed Ramm, seconded by Sue Rude, and passed unanimously; the meeting ended at 7:28 p.m.
