District previews independent adoption of Essential Health materials; PAC urged to review

Grants Pass SD 7 staff told the Parent Advisory Council on Nov. 6 that they plan to recommend an independent adoption of Essential Health curriculum materials for middle and high school. Chair S1 said the proposed middle‑ and high‑school books were reviewed by teachers and do not meet some state rubric criteria, but teachers believe they can supplement lessons to meet state standards and community expectations.
S1 said the state’s adoption cycle runs about every seven years and that teachers and district teams review publishers’ submissions against a rubric. The district will provide access to the materials online; the publisher gave review access until March 10. S1 said hard copies are available in the district office for PAC members who prefer in‑person review.
Staff emphasized the difference between state‑approved materials and independent adoption: the recommended titles are not on the state approved list but were reviewed locally and judged usable with teacher supplements. S1 described legal and compliance checks the district will complete for disabilities and other state requirements as part of independent adoption.
The council was told the staff will present the recommendation to the school board on Nov. 18 and will return to PAC with an action item in February or April for final input before the materials would be purchased in July and used beginning the next school year.
Members were reminded to review materials early and to raise concerns before the action date; staff asked PAC members to share feedback with the district and to help communicate review opportunities to the wider community.
