Board accepts Superintendent Matthew D. Thompson's retirement, creates vacancy and delays search selection

The Montgomery County Board of Education unanimously accepted Superintendent Matthew D. Thompson's retirement notice at its special session on Jan. 13, 2026, making his retirement effective June 30, 2026, and approved creating a superintendent vacancy effective July 1, 2026.
The acceptance of the retirement and the creation of the vacancy were recorded as formal motions. Ms. Carmela Fletcher-Green moved to accept Dr. Thompson's retirement (Order #2025-26:064); Mrs. Donna Amburgey seconded. The motion passed 5-0 with Dr. Emily Settle, chair, Mr. Allie Webb, vice chair, Mrs. Amburgey, Ms. Fletcher-Green and Mrs. Shaunna Patton voting yes. For the vacancy (Order #2025-26:065) Mrs. Shaunna Patton moved and Mr. Allie Webb seconded; that motion also passed 5-0.
During the same meeting the board heard presentations from two superintendent-search providers. Kathy Fields presented KASA's superintendent search services and Tim Abrams presented KSBA's services. The board discussed the firms but took no selection vote; the board unanimously tabled the item to a special session on Jan. 20, 2026 for further consideration.
The board recessed briefly to convene a District Finance Corporation meeting and then reconvened in open session before taking the retirement and vacancy actions. The special session adjourned at 8:59 p.m.
Next step: the board is scheduled to revisit and may select a search firm at the Jan. 20, 2026 special session.
