Council proclaims YMCA’s 150th anniversary and honors public-works and parks staff

The City Council read a proclamation May 21 recognizing the YMCA’s 150th anniversary and declared June 2026 a month of related observances in San Antonio. The proclamation, read by the presiding officer, noted the YMCA’s long history of providing childcare, wellness and intergenerational services.
Luis López, identified in the proceedings as the organization’s president, accepted the recognition and thanked the mayor, council and YMCA volunteers. “Muchas gracias por este honor increíble y por reconocer 150 años del impacto de YMCA en la comunidad,” he said, and described YMCA programs serving thousands of families.
Councilmembers praised the YMCA’s neighborhood programs and volunteers and noted specific local sites and partnerships. After the proclamation the council also recognized Public Works Week and acknowledged roughly 700 employees who maintain streets, drainage and other infrastructure.
A parks maintenance employee (identified in remarks as Eric) described work across more than 250 parks, previewed an employee video and emphasized teams that clean and maintain park safety ahead of a holiday weekend. Council members commended both departments for daily service that affects residents’ quality of life.
