The council gave property owners at 304 North Douglas a deadline to complete demolition and reconstruction by the council's first meeting in September, following a staff update that owners agreed to a plan and schedule.
Staff summarized the prior Dec. 9 direction: 60 days to remove a garage, then up to six months to rebuild the back wall, fix the guardrail and complete other repairs. Staff said the owners provided an update and agreed to the schedule and engineering work. "They agreed everything, and she wrote it down in her update to council," staff said.
Karen Bonar, who identified herself as a tenant and publisher at the 304 North Douglas address, urged the council to ensure utilities remain connected during demolition. "Our heat is provided by gas, and we wanna be sure we have gas through the May 1," she said, asking staff to coordinate so the reporter's business is not left without heat. Staff answered that the contractor and staff will coordinate with utility and building owners to avoid service disruption.
Council discussed a reporting date and decided the project should be checked at the first meeting in September; the motion directing that schedule passed by voice vote. The council also emphasized that owners must meet reporting and accountability obligations; staff will confirm agreements with the contractor and the property owner and report back at the September check-in.
The action leaves the city in a monitoring role while the owner and contractor complete the agreed repairs.
