District outlines hybrid plan to give 6th-graders access to band after grade shifts

Band director Finnegan told the board the district developed a hybrid plan to deliver band instruction after the move of sixth grade to elementary campuses. He said inner-city students from Forest Hills and Northside will travel to Colleton County Middle School for band, with transportation timed to avoid lost instructional minutes. Students at other schools (Hendersonville, Bells and Cottageville) will receive band on their home campuses, taught by campus music instructors supported by district band staff.
Finnegan said band will be taught four days a week (Monday–Thursday) with Friday reserved for physical education. He reported strong recruitment: more than 175 students expressed interest in band, and most music positions have been filled. Trustees praised the plan and asked that the district monitor 5th- and 6th-grade students’ participation and family outreach to maintain enrollment.
The presentation included operational details — instrument availability (including donated instruments), soundproofing options and staff assignments — and no formal board vote was required at the meeting.
