Board advances policy updates on wellness, board organization and student admissions

At the July 21 meeting, Trustee Witkin presented three policy items for first reading and described the substantive changes and legal basis for each.

Policy ADF (district wellness) includes updates to digital-wellness language; Witkin said the changes (highlighted in blue in the distributed packet) reflect requirements from state, federal and USDA guidance. Attorney Allison Hanna, participating by phone, said she was aware of no other changes and confirmed the updates are required by law.

Policy BD (board organization) proposes suggested language that would encourage — but not require — the most recent chairperson to serve as board secretary the following year to promote continuity. Witkin stressed the recommendation is permissive and would require coordination among board members.

Policy JFAB and its administrative rule JFAR concern admission of nonresident students and were updated to reflect new state law on inter‑district transfers. Witkin said the policy will need to be submitted to the state Department of Education for review and that the district expects only minor technical tweaks before final adoption.

A trustee moved to accept the first readings of ADF, BD and JFAB/JFAR; the motion was seconded and the board approved the first readings by unanimous consent. Later, the board approved the second reading of policy CCC (administrative organization) — which establishes that the superintendent will present and manage the organization chart — by unanimous consent.

No final adoptions of ADF, BD or JFAB/JFAR were recorded at this meeting; staff said the JFAB/JFAR materials will be submitted to the state for review and returned for final action if required.
