Tama County supervisors unanimously approve Highway V18 closure for Chelsea car show, adopt homestead exemption determinations

The board directed that Highway V18 between 1st Street and Iowana Street be closed on July 25, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate the Chelsea Fire Department’s benefit car show; the City of Chelsea will provide a detour. The road-closure resolution (Resolution 7-6-2026A) was moved by Supervisor Curt Kupka, seconded by Supervisor Curt Hilmer and adopted by roll call, with every supervisor voting aye.
The board also approved Resolution 7-6-2026B, which accepts the County Assessor’s 2026 Homestead Tax Credit and Military Service Tax Exemption claims for taxes payable 2027–2028 and authorizes the chair to sign notices of disallowance for claims the assessor recommended to deny. The resolution cites Iowa Code sections 425.3, 425A.3 and 426A.14. Supervisor David Turner moved the resolution; Supervisor Mark Doland seconded; the roll call vote was unanimous.
In other business, the board moved next week’s regular meeting from its usual date to Tuesday, July 14, at 8:30 a.m., a change made to accommodate the Proclamation Day holiday. The board approved regular claims for payment in the amount of $70,149.28; discussion noted that Heartland Insurance premiums will be paid in August to allow the county to earn additional interest before payment.
Supervisors also provided brief updates: Supervisor Curt Hilmer said he attended a Board of Health meeting and noted the Board of Health requested a joint meeting with the supervisors on July 22 at noon; Supervisor Mark Doland reported attending a Region 6 meeting; Supervisor David Turner said two core network switches need to be purchased and he is soliciting bids; Supervisor Heather Knebel said she will attend a Heartland meeting on Thursday.
Public comments were recorded from Karen Murty, Stacey Zeman and Gerald Husak; the minutes note that public comment time closed at 8:55 a.m. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 a.m.
