The Logan County Board of Education on May 5 approved a set of routine but consequential action items, including out‑of‑state student travel, secondary textbook adoptions, two memoranda of understanding, financial invoices, and multiple personnel actions.
Dr. Pat Joe White, superintendent, said the action items were approved by the state board and listed the approved out‑of‑state trips for Hue Dingus Elementary, Mann Elementary, Chapmanville Middle School and Holden Central Elementary, noting many trips occur on Saturdays so students won't miss class.
The board approved secondary textbook adoptions required by state code: Pearson for personal finance; Goodheart‑Willcox for health and wellness; AAA for drivers education; and Davis Publications for middle and high school art. The district also completed a multi‑year social studies adoption using Cengage (grades 6–7), Gallipade (grade 8), McGraw Hill (grades 9–12 sociology and economics) and BFW (psychology).
Two memoranda of understanding were announced and approved: a partnership with Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and the Ralph R. Willis School of Practical Nursing to create a seamless LPN‑to‑RN pathway; and an agreement with Step by Step to implement after‑school Dreamers programs at Logan, Holden and Omar elementary schools beginning July 1, 2026.
For finances, the board approved invoices for the month that totalled $627,303.45 across county operations, career and technical education, food service, ISA, permanent improvements and purchasing card expenditures. Dr. White said invoices are available for public review at the central office and directed inquiries to Rhonda Justice as listed in the agenda.
On personnel, the board approved multiple coaching appointments, administrative transfers (including Janice Williamson to Omar Elementary principal effective 2026–27), numerous transfers from reduction‑in‑force lists back into classroom positions, several substitute hires, resignations of a custodian and a substitute cook, and a termination of contract for Justin Workman effective April 14 through May 5, 2026.
No additional public debate or roll‑call votes were recorded on these items during the meeting. The board moved on to the superintendent's report after the action‑item review.
