Mayor proclaims Disability Independence Day; council honors local award recipients

Mayor Quintal opened the July 20 meeting by reading a proclamation recognizing Disability Independence Day and citing the Americans with Disabilities Act as the landmark law protecting people with disabilities. “I encourage all citizens to join in celebrating the strength of our diverse community to support ongoing efforts towards accessibility and inclusion,” Quintal said.
The council presented Spirit of St. Charles awards to three honorees: Just Kebabs (business), a student of St. Charles East recommended by Principal Jim Richter, and a community performer, Abraham, noted for international soccer‑freestyling achievements. Quintal praised each recipient for community service, leadership and local investment. The mayor also announced that over 200 soccer balls were donated to the park district or school district for local youth programs.
In community announcements, Quintal thanked volunteers who helped with a school‑supply drive, noted a downtown rock hunt planned for Aug. 7, and said fireworks were rescheduled for Sept. 3. The mayor closed by encouraging residents to attend equity and inclusion commission meetings and other community events.
No formal Council action was taken on the proclamation or awards; these were ceremonial recognitions and community announcements.
