The Freeman Town Council voted to declare 25 existing golf carts surplus after a short debate over how to dispose of the vehicles. A committee member moved to surplus the carts and the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council members said 25 new carts are expected to arrive early next year, prompting the move to clear inventory. ‘‘I make a motion to serve both 25 golf carts,’’ a committee member said; the Clerk seconded and the Chair called for the ayes.
Members discussed two main disposal routes: the appraisal route, which requires three independent appraisals and a sale price of at least 90% of the appraisal average, or using an auctioneer. Staff noted auctions can carry fees and the town could sit on unsold units unless a buyer takes the whole lot. Council members also raised the option of selling piecemeal or to dealers who lease carts to courses.
Lonnie Jaden was identified in discussion as offering temporary storage for the carts if needed. The council agreed staff will compile serial numbers and condition information for the 25 carts and return with a plan for which units to surplus and how to proceed with sale or auction.
