Union City Borough is moving forward with immediate repairs and preliminary testing after sinkholes were identified in Municipal Lot #1 and authorized applying for county CDBG funds to cover part of the stormwater repair costs.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips told the council that "Mansfield will fill the sink hole and replace approximately 10’ of pipe and install the new catch basin." He said the borough plans to perform smoke and dye testing after those repairs. The borough is awaiting quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to repave the affected areas, and business owners and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified before smoke testing begins.
Separately, the council authorized submitting an application to Erie County for Community Development Block Grant funds of up to $100,000 to cover a portion of the stormwater work in Municipal Lot #1. Councilor Steadman moved to approve submitting the application and Councilor Osborn seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
No contract awards or final paving contractors were selected at the meeting; quotes are pending and grant award decisions will depend on the county’s application process. The council held an executive session after adjournment to discuss real estate, personnel and contracts; no action was taken in that session.
