Negaunee school board hears presentation on transfer of Hope United Methodist Church property

Negaunee — Pastor Scott Harmon of Hope United Methodist Church met with the Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education on June 22 to discuss the forthcoming transfer of the church property to the district and plans for demolition and salvage.

At the Committee of the Whole special meeting, Pastor Scott Harmon said the congregation understands "the building will not be preserved and that historical items will be salvaged to the best of our ability," and asked that "special attention be paid during demolition near the entrances for the original cornerstone." Superintendent Andy Skewis and board members discussed logistics and a potential timeline for the transfer. A final church service is scheduled for Aug. 2.

The presentation included mention of an environmental study being conducted by TriMedia and district plans to secure the building for safety and prepare it for winter. Board members discussed allowing the congregation flexibility to remove and salvage items such as stained-glass windows and other historical elements "even after taking possession," according to meeting minutes. No formal motion related to the property transfer was made at the meeting.

Earlier in the meeting the board approved the agenda and order of priority on a motion by G. Toutant, supported by M. Saari; the motion carried 7-0. Board President Todd Saunders opened and closed the meeting; the session adjourned at 4:27 p.m.

The presentation was informational; the board did not vote on or adopt any action related to acquisition or demolition during the June 22 meeting. The district and church plan further coordination as the transfer process continues.
