New Lothrop board approves amended 2025–26 budget, adopts initial 2026–27 projection; hires special‑education teacher and OKs bus financing

At its June 15 budget hearing the New Lothrop Board of Education approved the final amended 2025–26 budget and accepted the initial projected 2026–27 budget, approved multiple personnel and contract items (all 6-0), and authorized financing for three new buses to be delivered in July 2026.
The New Lothrop Board of Education approved a series of budget, personnel and contract measures at a June 15 budget hearing at the high school media center.
Board member Richard White read bills for payment totaling $1,040,872.65 (general fund $988,402.26; school service $52,470.39). The board voted 6-0 to approve payment of bills and to accept the monthly financial report showing a beginning balance of $3,074,334.87, receipts of $1,116,003.20, expenditures of $1,040,872.65 and an ending balance of $3,149,465.42. The board then approved the final amended budget for the 2025–26 school year and accepted the initial projected budget for 2026–27; both motions carried 6-0.
The board approved the hire of Haley Parson as a high school special-education teacher at MA Step 5, effective Aug. 17, 2026, contingent on a successful background check (motion by Jenn Otter, supported by Tim Birchmeier; vote 6-0). The board also approved all administrative and salaried support contracts for the 2026–27 school year and adopted changes to the junior high and high school handbooks and the 2026–27 athletic code of conduct; each motion passed unanimously.
On operational matters the board approved a tentative agreement with the Transportation Group covering the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years and accepted a TowerPinkster pre-bond services agreement. The board adopted a resolution authorizing 2026 refunding bonds to refinance part of 2014 bonds and approved a resolution to finance the purchase of three buses being received from Midwest Transit in July 2026; both resolutions passed 6-0.
The board also approved routine scheduling and extracurricular items, including setting board meetings for the third Monday of each month (with exceptions for December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027) and approving a tentative Mackinac Island trip for 7th-grade students on May 17–18, 2027, contingent on sufficient student interest.
The financial votes and contract approvals were introduced and read on the record by Richard White and motioned by board members listed in the minutes; every formal vote recorded in the meeting minutes carried 6-0. The board did not receive any public comments on the agenda or non-agenda items during this meeting.
