Wasco police highlight summer youth program, drone replacement and enforcement statistics

Wasco Police Department Chief Mora told the council that the department's report for the first two weeks of July showed increased activity and described the department's junior summer camp and equipment updates.
"It looks like we had 111 incidents, 545 calls for service, and 566 officer-generated activity," Chief Mora said in his presentation. He described 234 traffic stops with 64 citations and five collisions in the period, and said the department recovered multiple stolen vehicles. Mora said the department recently completed a one-week junior summer camp where children learned CPR, building-search and investigation basics and participated in scenarios.
Mora told council that a drone previously damaged has been replaced and staff are setting up and training dispatchers; he described the program as a "train the trainer" model that will require flight hours for certification. He also described the Flock system (vehicle-recovery alerts) that notifies officers when a stolen vehicle enters the city so they can respond.
Council members praised the youth program and asked about ages and logistics; Mora said participants ranged "anywhere from 6 to about 14, 15" and mentioned a pool day and pizza party at the camp's end. Members also asked follow-ups about drone training and how the Flock alerts have supported recoveries.
Ending: Chief Mora said staff will continue outreach and provide updates as the department expands the drone program and refines training.
