Meeting roundup: several abbreviated approvals, conditions and continuations at May 12 HDC meeting

At its May 12 meeting the Newport Historic District Commission handled a mix of brief summary approvals, conditioned approvals and continuations alongside the meeting’s larger contested items.

The commission accepted staff findings as its findings of fact at the start of the session and approved a set of abbreviated/summary applications (including 17 Broadway and 7 Cottage Street). The 17 Broadway sign application was approved after a commissioner questioned scale; the record shows discussion about a 75‑inch sign but the motion carried. The commission approved 14 Leroy Avenue’s abbreviated window application with the condition that a manufacturer cut sheet be reviewed and approved by the preservation planner in advance. The application for 6 Sunshine Court to add a fixed window was approved with a condition that the preservation planner sign off on the replacement window choice prior to installation.

The commission continued more complex matters to the June meeting, including the 6 Katzmann Place porch application (applicant asked to return with clarer materials and detailing) and the 22nd Street roof application, where commissioners indicated a preference for an in‑kind wood shingle replacement or administrative approval rather than approval of asphalt shingles on a contributing building.

Procedural notes: the commission split the 365 Thames Street application (banners approved, front elevation/vestibule continued), scheduled at least one site visit between now and the June meeting, and issued certificates of appropriateness for approvals granted that evening. The acting chair closed the meeting after no further business was raised.
