The Newport Historic District Commission unanimously approved a restoration plan for 33 K Street on May 12 that seeks to repair historic fabric and remove later, incongruous additions.
Architect Spencer McComb described the project as an effort to "pull all that back, restore all the woodwork" and to retain and restore existing windows where possible rather than replace them. Owner Cindy Witka told the commission she and the project team have investigated the house’s history and will restore chimneys, wood trim and other exterior features consistent with the house’s historic character.
Commissioners praised the proposal as a good example of stewardship. The chair moved to approve the application under Newport Standard 17.80.060 A1–A7, and the motion carried by voice vote.
The approval authorizes the demolition of a nonhistoric sunroom, alignment and restoration of the rear L windows, replacement in kind where necessary, and replacement of damaged wood trim and other restorative work as shown in the submitted plans. Commissioners asked the applicant to pursue restoration of the wrought‑iron fence and to coordinate final details with the preservation planner.
