Alachua Conservation Trust proposes pedestrian entrance to Orange Lake Overlook

Jeffrey Forbes, development coordinator for the Alachua Conservation Trust, presented to the McIntosh Town Council on May 20 a proposal to provide pedestrian access to the Orange Lake Overlook from McIntosh’s southeast side, near the old railroad corridor.
Forbes said ACT has been the owner of the overlook since it opened and described a proposal that would permit pedestrians and bicyclists to reach trails closer to homes; the plan would exclude golf carts and motorized vehicles. Cllr Deaderick questioned how parking would be managed and asked whether the project would generate local jobs and what the tax implications might be. The council and attending residents discussed railroad lease terms and signage for the proposed access.
Resident organizers and council members urged further study. Anji Fogarty said she had invited Forbes to present and recommended placing the matter on the next agenda; Patti Dodd suggested forming an ad hoc committee to research lease terms and other factors. VP Mullikin asked TM Gonzalez to add the item to next month’s agenda for continued consideration.
No formal action was taken; the council requested additional information and possible options for parking, lease arrangements and signage before any decision.
