Eastport Recycles schedules August e-waste collections and approves $600 ramp purchase

The Eastport Recycles committee on June 24 approved its May 14 minutes, authorized the purchase of a ramp for the town recycling center and set two E-waste collection dates for August.
Becca Hammond moved to approve the May 14 minutes; Chip Hammond seconded and the motion carried, the committee recorded. Committee member Beth Clifford then moved to buy a ramp quoted by Eric Voisine; Stephanie Thomas seconded and the purchase was approved unanimously.
The committee noted $1,564.88 in the recycling account and discussed using those funds to pay for a $600 ramp and to prepay costs for the planned E-waste event. Committee member Stephanie Thomas reported two new volunteer prospects (one already signed up) and said she would post reminders for the center’s second- and fourth-Saturday hours on the committee’s Facebook page. Members also said cardboard is picked up on Water Street weekly and agreed to follow up with the local Family Dollar about its cardboard recycling practice.
Samra Kuseybi told the group that North Coast Services has delivered the E-waste collection containers and that the center will open from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 8 and Aug. 22. Kuseybi said she will place an advertisement in the Quoddy Tides for the July 24 edition to publicize the events. The committee also assigned Stephanie Thomas to ask the city about the proper disposal or processing route for fluorescent bulbs that were dropped off at the center as part of a Veolia light-recycling question.
Operational updates included Beth Clifford’s report that 63.1 pounds of plastic had been recycled since May 15 and that pallets are available at the center, with additional pallets obtainable from Hammond Lumber. Chip Hammond and Dave Dineen reported that one bale each of mixed paper and newspaper has been completed, corrugated cardboard is being baled, and they proposed forming two-person bailing teams (Chip with Becca; Dave with John Richards). The committee also discussed using fish containers rather than gaylords for storage once Howie empties the water and moves the containers inside.
The committee scheduled its next meeting for July 13 at 6:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
