West Point proposes $22.98 million FY 2025–2026 budget, recommends tax-rate increases

West Point’s Town Council held a public hearing April 22, 2025, on a proposed balanced Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget of $22,981,349 that would raise the personal property tax rate to $3.49 per $100, the machinery and tools rate to $2.37 per $100 and the real estate rate to $0.56 per $100.
Assistant Town Manager Steve Hudgins presented the plan and described it as a balanced budget. He said the proposal provides $5,073,362 in local aid to schools, an increase of $295,882 from the prior year, and includes $105,000 earmarked for school capital improvement projects. Mr. Hudgins also outlined allocations for the water and solid waste funds and advised that a copy of the proposed budget is available at Town Hall or on the town’s website and that questions may be directed to the town offices by phone.
Mayor Joshua T. “Jack” Lawson read the public hearing advertisement and asked Town Clerk Karen M. Barrow whether any residents had requested assistance to attend or had requested copies of the proposed budget; Barrow said none had. The mayor opened the public hearing for comment; no members of the public spoke and the hearing was closed.
Lawson said state code requires the council to wait seven days after the public hearing before adopting the budget and that the item will appear on the council’s April 29, 2025 meeting agenda for adoption. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
