District to add state'adopted Standard Response Protocol to emergency plan; staff to return for approval

District staff presented an informational update on the South Lyon Community Schools emergency management plan, reporting that the district will incorporate the state-adopted Standard Response Protocol and additional statutory changes into the district'level manual.
Mr. Archibald explained the change in vocabulary the district will adopt so staff, students, parents and first responders share common directives. He described the five SRP action terms: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter, and noted the state directed districts to implement the protocol for the 2026-27 school year. "This is creating common vocabulary," Mr. Archibald said, adding that the district will keep its ALICE practices for active-shooter response and fold them into the revised manual.
Staff described specific implementation steps: posters with the SRP directions will be placed in classrooms, hallways and entryways; staff training will be led by the director of safety and security and the district's SROs in August; and the district will coordinate with local first responders on the protocol. Mr. Archibald said the manual will be updated to reference the SRP and include a descriptive addendum for each action. The item was informational and staff will bring the updated emergency management plan back to the board for approval at the next meeting in August.
The board asked clarifying questions about door-locking policies and night-lock shades; staff confirmed current practices already align with many SRP elements and that staff have been preparing signage and outreach to families.
