Board approves bond spending to hire roofing consultant and pre-purchase pool equipment; commissioning award to return for action

The South Lyon Community Schools board approved multiple bond-program procurement recommendations at its June meeting, including a roofing-consultant award and an early purchase of pool mechanical equipment intended to address long lead times.
Mr. Archibald presented the recommendation to award phase-two roofing consultant services for the 2025 bond program and said staff was asking for approval at the same meeting. The presentation listed the recommended award amount for the roofing consultant as "116,927 thousand dollars" as presented to the board. The motion to approve the roofing-consultant recommendation passed by roll call (board recorded as 6-0).
On the pool project, the board reviewed a recommendation to pre-purchase mechanical equipment for the South Lyon East High School pool from Thermalnetics in the amount of $542,708. Staff said the unit'lead time could be as long as 38 weeks, and ordering now would allow the district to receive equipment by next spring and then transfer installation responsibility to the mechanical contractor once the rest of the pool package is bid. "The intention is we'd be moving forward with this vendor to get them to order the materials," said Mr. Smith, a project presenter. The board approved the pre-purchase by roll call, 6-0.
Staff also presented an award recommendation for third-party MEP and building-envelope commissioning services for the first phase of bond projects (early childhood center, Salem Elementary, Sayre Elementary, and the pool renovation). The district reported it received multiple proposals and recommended a $110,000 contract to provide commissioning for the initial projects. That item was informational and will return for action next month, district staff said.
Board members emphasized the need for careful administration of bond funds. "We're...making some choices to be wise with the community's trust," a board member said during comments, acknowledging the additional consultant work and early purchases.
Next steps: staff will finalize contract documents and return with formal action on the commissioning award at a subsequent meeting. The roofing consultant and pool equipment purchases were approved and will proceed to implementation.
