Coquille SD adds parking and changes traffic flow to speed school drop-off

Coquille School District 8 trustees on Sept. 20 heard staff reports that new parking and traffic-pattern changes at two elementary campuses have eased congestion during student drop-off and pickup.
Superintendent Wayne Gallagher and Lincoln School of Early Learning Principal Amy May told the board that the LSEL site now has a newly completed parking lot that adds about 61 spaces, improving access for daycare providers and creating short-term parking for parents who walk children into the building. At Coquille Valley Elementary (CVE), staff said the entrance was rerouted to N. Collier with exits onto 10th Street, and playground gates are being locked to improve pedestrian safety.
"Parents are getting used to the change and pickup is going much faster and not getting backed up," Amy May said in the presentation to the board. Deputy Owens assisted early on by reminding parents about the new entrance pattern, staff reported.
District staff also described adjustments to bus routing: the bus route now uses Dean Street rather than Collier to separate buses from parent vehicles at pickup points. Staff members Armando Ruiz and Nate Marshall reported that CVE gained about 14 additional parking spots in the new pattern and that the separated flows reduced vehicle conflicts at the intersection of 10th and Collier.
Board members did not take separate action on the traffic updates; the changes were presented as completed or in active implementation. The presentation closed with district staff thanking local law enforcement for supporting the change while families adapt to the new patterns.
The board adjourned at 7:42 p.m.
