Board hears update on campus construction, Eli's Law compliance and AAA classification denial

At its June 15 meeting the Midland School District board received operational updates from Superintendent Toby Crosby about campus construction, an athletic classification decision and compliance work tied to Eli's Law.
Crosby told the board that site preparation at the junior high is active: contractors are doing dirt work, Entergy has moved two utility poles and expects to relocate two more, and city sewer contractors are installing a holding tank and sewer lines on the campus with a projected completion before the start of classes.
On athletics, Crosby reported that Lance Taylor, director of the Arkansas Activities Association, replied to the district’s request to move back to a 1A conference. Taylor denied the request on the basis that it was submitted after the deadline established in the AAA handbook.
Crosby also flagged a compliance item tied to Eli's Law, which goes into effect this year: the district must place listening devices in each locker room. KLC Video Security provided a materials estimate of $10,955.70 for the purchase and installation of the devices. Crosby presented the figure as an initial procurement estimate; the minutes do not record formal board authorization for the purchase at this meeting.
Crosby and High School Principal Cindy Armstrong reported they attended the Independence Chamber of Commerce’s Work/Wired event to discuss workforce development and county wage goals. The board did not take formal action on these operational items; the reports were presented for information and follow-up as needed.
