The Coffey County Commission voted to send a statutory notice of intent to exceed the county’s revenue‑neutral tax rate and set a public hearing on the proposed levy.
Finance staff reported the preliminary budget produced an estimated mill levy of 54.417 mills, roughly a 3.2% increase compared with current levies, and noted the county’s R&R (revenue‑neutral) comparator sits at 52.736 mills. Commissioners were reminded that one mill represents about $700,000 in tax revenue and that achieving the revenue‑neutral rate would require roughly $1.2 million in additional cuts to the proposed budget.
Chair moved and the commission approved a motion to send the notice of intent to the county clerk, proposing a rate of 54.417 mills and scheduling the revenue‑neutral hearing for Aug. 24, 2026 at 9:20 a.m. in the Coffey County Commission Chambers. The motion passed 4-1; Commissioner Parker recorded the lone dissent.
