Riverton USD 404 board approves consent agenda, accepts counselor retirement and OKs FMLA request

At its Nov. 13 meeting the Riverton Unified School District #404 board approved a consent agenda including $406,848.36 in October expenses, accepted the retirement of High School Counselor Brad Hunt effective end of the 2025–26 school year, approved an intermittent FMLA request and heard updates on facilities and a strategic plan process.
The Riverton Unified School District #404 Board of Education on Nov. 13 approved a consent agenda that included the meeting agenda, minutes from Oct. 9 and Oct. 28 and October expenses totaling $406,848.36.
Board President Cyle Haywood called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Riverton Board of Education Office. Judy Adams moved to approve the consent agenda; Matt Darnaby seconded and the motion carried unanimously among members present.
Maintenance and school leaders reported routine operations and upcoming events. Justin Wilson, Maintenance/Transportation Director, said new overhead doors were installed at the bus barn, bus No. 58 was repaired, greenhouse heaters were added and new commons furniture was set up. Adam Thomasson, Elementary Principal, reviewed recent and upcoming elementary activities. Zach Martin, Middle School Principal, said the Middle School Student Council will visit Watered Gardens and that the Middle School Christmas Concert is tentatively being moved from Dec. 16 to Dec. 11 because of a home basketball game. High School Principal Chad Harper highlighted high school events and, along with Superintendent Kevin Cooper, commended Shannon Underwood and student groups for the district’s Veteran’s Day program.
Superintendent Kevin Cooper told the board work has begun on a district strategic plan. The district will work with Rich Profitt from Greenbush and hold a board work session next week with representatives from Incite to review community survey results and discuss next steps.
The board held two executive sessions. The first, moved by Matt Darnaby and seconded by Keeley Adams, was under the Kansas Open Meetings Act non-elected personnel exception; the board retained Superintendent Kevin Cooper and High School Principal Chad Harper for that discussion and then returned to open session. The board later moved into a separate executive session for preliminary discussion of real estate to protect the district’s bargaining position; that session was moved by Judy Adams, seconded by Matt Darnaby and the board returned to open session after the stated interval.
On personnel business, the board accepted the retirement of Brad Hunt, High School Counselor, effective at the end of the 2025–26 school year. The motion to accept the retirement was moved by Matt Darnaby, seconded by Keeley Adams and carried unanimously; the board expressed its appreciation for Hunt’s years of service to the district.
The board also approved an intermittent FMLA leave request as presented; the motion was moved by Keeley Adams, seconded by Judy Adams and carried unanimously.
Judy Adams moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:04 p.m.; Keeley Adams seconded and the motion carried. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. in the Riverton Board of Education Office.
