Board approves larger directional and monument signs for Methodist Texan campus

The Balcones Heights Board of Adjustment approved a package of signage variances for the Methodist Texan campus at 6700 IH‑10 West, allowing multiple larger directional signs and two larger monument signs to improve navigation across the hospital campus.

City staff presented the request from Executive Signs on behalf of Methodist Texan, describing directional signs proposed at 6 feet tall and 24 square feet (the code limit cited by staff is 3 feet and 12 square feet) and a request for approximately 15 directional signs based on the facility footprint. Staff also described monument signs proposed at roughly 10 feet 6–8 inches tall and up to 80 square feet (the code’s monument limit cited was 5 feet 6 inches and 50 square feet). Staff recommended approval on the basis that improved wayfinding supports emergency‑response access and visitor navigation; staff reported no written opposition from the 200‑foot notices issued for the property.

Jacob Dodson of Executive Signs answered board questions about sign locations and setbacks; board members raised line‑of‑sight concerns at some entrances, and staff clarified proposed setbacks and sight‑line checks. Board members moved to end debate and then voted to approve the requested directional and monument sign variances. The board and staff emphasized that improved visibility could help emergency responders locate the ER entrance, and staff said the approvals will allow the hospital to update signage to reflect current circulation patterns.

The board completed the signage item and adjourned its meeting.
