Capital Projects Manager Doug Anderson said negotiations with the contractor left several noncritical but important items out of the original contracted scope (security lighting, enhanced landscape and irrigation, and additional fencing repairs). He told the board the core recreational facilities — playground, courts and fields — remain funded under the current contract and that the extra money would allow completion of the remaining amenities and repairs.
Public speakers, including Kevin Evans (Wallala Municipal Advisory Council) and Dave Schbach (Mendocino Coast Recreation and Park District), supported full funding and asked for clarity on ongoing maintenance plans and county commitment to operations. Schbach said the park is a vital South Coast recreational asset and urged the county to partner with the local recreation district on long‑term maintenance.
Supervisor Williams moved approval, noting it would demonstrate follow‑through to state grantors; the motion carried unanimously. Staff said the appropriation is one‑time carryover funding and suggested county staff and the park district continue discussions about a durable maintenance plan.
What happens next: Public Works/Capital Projects will authorize change orders to the current contractor to complete the additional work; staff will coordinate with MCRPD on long‑term operations and maintenance discussions.
