Cullman City Council approves school resource-officer MOU, airport grant application and routine measures; hears committee reports

At its meeting the Cullman City Council approved several routine resolutions and heard committee reports across public safety, tourism, public works and utilities.
Among the items approved: Resolution 2026-130, a memorandum of understanding with the Cullman City Board of Education to provide school resource officers for the 2026–27 school year at the same per-school staffing levels as the previous year. Council members noted minor stipulations about ensuring at least one SRO is on campus during school hours and adjustments for reimbursement of extracurricular coverage.
The council also approved Resolution 2026-128 authorizing staff to apply for federal and state matching funds for the Cullman Regional Airport and passed Resolution 2026-129 to update position control for the street department. Special-event permits were approved for an Oktoberfest 5K/10K on Oct. 3, 2026 (Wellstone) and a Grace Episcopal Church Jingle Bell 5K and one-mile run on Dec. 12, 2026.
Committee reports highlighted: a public-safety uptick in heat-related Wild Water injuries in June and a successful Police Citizens Academy; tourism recognition for Park and Rec and high attendance at the ASA archery tournament; street-paving progress and engineering hires in public works; and wastewater and clean-water plant repair completions in utilities. Council also announced the launch of the new Cullman City website, which includes ADA accessibility features, an on-site chatbot and a vendor bid-notification portal.
The council set the next meeting for Monday, Aug. 10, 2026 at 7 p.m. and then adjourned.
