The Gary Sanitary District announced that, beginning July 1, 2026, alley trash pickup will end and residents must place all trash bins at the curb for collection.
"Beginning 07/01/2026, all trash bins must be moved to the front of your home and placed at the curb for collection," the announcement said. It advises residents to put bins at the curb the night before their scheduled pickup day and to keep bins at least 3 feet away from vehicles, mailboxes and other containers to allow for safe, efficient collection. After collection, bins should be removed from the curb by the end of the day.
The change is presented as part of the city—s effort to clear debris and overgrown vegetation from alleys and to improve neighborhood appearance and utility access. For more information the notice directs residents to garysanitary.gov or to call (219) 944-0595.
The announcement appeared at the start of the Redevelopment Commission meeting on July 22, 2026 as a public-service notice to residents.
