Clanton City Council unanimously adopts grant applications, hears two annexation first readings

Clanton — The Clanton City Council on June 8 unanimously adopted four resolutions that authorize grant applications for park improvements and firefighter staffing and equipment, and approved an intergovernmental purchase agreement with the Chilton County Commission.
Mayor Jeff Price called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Clanton City Hall. After a brief invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, the council approved the meeting agenda and the minutes from May 21 by unanimous voice vote.
The council recessed at 5:03 p.m. for two consecutive public hearings. In the first, Mayor Price opened a hearing on Ordinance No. 2026-05, which would annex property at 1577 County Road 28 for applicant Kerri Minor Collins; no members of the public spoke for or against the annexation. The council then heard a replacement ordinance, Ordinance No. 2026-06, to repeal and replace Ordinance No. 2025-14 and annex property at 329 County Road 764 for applicants Samuel and Idaleen H. Strength and Kenneth Fucich; again, there were no public comments. Mayor Price called the council back to order at 5:04 p.m. The ordinances were presented as first readings; each was described as available for review at Clanton City Hall and likely to be considered at a future meeting.
Back in open session the council took the following formal actions, all passed by unanimous voice vote of the members present:
- Adopted Resolution 2026-06-08-01, authorizing a grant application through Cawaco RC&D Council for park walkway and sidewalk enhancements (moved by Councilmember Don Driver; seconded by Councilmember Phillip Giles).
- Adopted Resolution 2026-06-08-02, authorizing a purchase agreement with the Chilton County Commission (moved by Councilmember Awlahjaday Agee; seconded by Councilmember Billy Singleton).
- Adopted Resolution 2026-06-08-03, authorizing a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant application through FEMA on behalf of the Clanton Fire Department (moved by Councilmember Don Driver; seconded by Councilmember Phillip Giles).
- Adopted Resolution 2026-06-08-04, authorizing an Assistance to Firefighters Grant application through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/FEMA on behalf of the Clanton Fire Department (moved by Councilmember Awlahjaday Agee; seconded by Councilmember Phillip Giles).
During the council and public comments period a resident identified as Ms. Binion asked the council to waive a $5,000 fee for a Juneteenth block party and asked whether the non-profit status of Mr. Binion could be considered; council members did not take action on the request at the meeting. Mayor Price also announced Clanton City offices will be closed Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. With no further business, the council adjourned at 5:16 p.m.
