The North Bay Village Commission issued two proclamations recognizing World Alzheimer's Awareness Month and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Mayor Rachel Streitfeld read a proclamation acknowledging the impact of Alzheimer's disease on individuals and families and invited Gloria Romero Rosas to speak. Romero Rosas described caring for her mother and urged residents to seek early diagnosis. "The sooner that we know, the sooner that you can be eligible for treatment," she said, and encouraged residents to consult resources such as the Alzheimer's Association.
Commissioner Trevone read a proclamation recognizing National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and presented it to Sylvia Vanni, founder of the Mystic Force Foundation and the Hero's Hangout. Vanni thanked the village for ongoing support and cautioned that the proclamation's cited 85% cure rate applies only to the most common childhood cancers; she noted some diagnoses (for example DIPG) remain inoperable and terminal.
Both proclamations were presented as ceremonial recognitions; commissioners and community members thanked organizers and invited collaboration on awareness events and potential community participation in a "Walk to End Alzheimer's" team representing North Bay Village.
