HAYS, Kan. — Superintendent and Principal Dettra Crawford reported to the USD 217 Board Oct. 14 that the district needs new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) because existing units are expired. Crawford also announced the district received the Kan Star award and the 2024 Commissioners Award and said she would convene Career and Technical Education (CTE) committee meetings during Buffer Week with a meal provided.
On facilities, the board received quotes from AquaShield for replacement of the grade school south gym roof; the quotes were included in the board packet for consideration. The minutes record the roof quotes as information only and do not show a vote to award a contract.
Crawford and staff also supplied technology updates: several district computers shipped with defective hard drives but have been replaced; nearly all new devices have been distributed to teachers. The ESOL KELPA testing computers were delivered and the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center will cover $342 from Title III funds toward that purchase, with the district to pay the remaining balance.
The board did not vote on the roof at the Oct. 14 meeting; any procurement or contract action will require a future agenda item and formal board approval.
