Staff presented three bus-shelter options and updated ridership data from KCATA, recommending staff seek council direction on both style and locations. Mister Scharf reviewed vendor options (a sculptural "Noble Winds" bench, conventional shelters with tempered glass, and larger modular shelters) and discussed warranty differences and lead times.
Council discussion focused on accessibility and protection from the elements. Several council members favored Option 3 as a practical, cost-effective choice that could still accommodate artistic treatments; others noted the first, more-artistic option could be suitable for pocket parks but might offer less coverage in bad weather.
Councilmember Faidley and others argued the shelters should be placed in commercial locations to avoid front-yard impacts for residents. By council direction and a formal motion, the council approved pursuing easement agreements and approved six priority locations: both directions at 48th Street and Roe, both directions at 51st and Roe, the Sunflower Medical stop, and a Johnson Drive location near St. Luke's (staff to confirm exact curb placements and coordinate historic-sign placement). The council did not finalize a vendor purchase this evening.
Staff will proceed to secure easements, refine site exhibits and return with cost estimates and recommended shelter style for final approval.
