Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board reviews splash pad opening, field upgrades and new recreation supervisor

The Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met May 20 and heard a series of staff updates on parks projects and programming, including plans to open the Jerry Ivey splash pad this weekend and temporary measures at athletic fields to get the spring season underway.
A staff member told the board the city "is preparing to open that splash pad to the public on Saturday morning," and said the site will be seeded and monitored to reestablish turf. The staff member said the splash pad uses a liquid chlorine system (replacing an earlier erosion-feeder puck system) and noted that the pad typically closes Sept. 30 or Oct. 1, which staff expect will help fall grass establishment. "The sand's not an ADA, approved surface for playgrounds," the staff member added when describing recent surface replacements.
Staff described temporary dugouts at Matson Field installed so ball season could begin on April 11 while a structural-engineered prefabricated steel design is completed; the department also has ordered a replacement scoreboard. On larger facility work, staff said Pestinger Family Stadium’s electrical and press-box PA improvements are largely complete, with a remaining item to place a 45-foot flagpole intended to serve both Pestinger and Dean Evans Stadiums.
Recreation programming updates included a report that municipal golf logged 3,773 rounds in April, the highest monthly total in five years, and that the Oakdale Park pickleball courts will receive new LED lighting to address electrical load issues discovered when concrete pads for bleachers were installed. Staff said a concrete improvement bid opening was postponed one week to allow additional local contractors to submit proposals; the current work is described as the fifth phase of the city’s concrete improvements program, with future attention planned for accessible parking and pathways at the Friendship Center.
In announcements, staff thanked outgoing board member Larry Pankratz for his service and said Kenwick Cove will have a soft opening for the season on Tuesday, May 26. When asked about staffing, a staff member said the new recreation supervisor began work this week and identified him only by his first name: Christopher.
The meeting opened with routine roll call and procedural votes to approve the agenda and March minutes; both motions passed by voice vote. With no further business, the chair moved to adjourn and the board voted to end the meeting.
