The Pascagoula Planning Board voted unanimously May 13 to recommend that City Council approve a signage variance for Academy Sports at 4201 Denny Ave allowing a 636.64-square-foot wall sign on the front and a 391.08-square-foot sign on the east rear side.
Chad Kepner, the city’s building official, said the requested sizes exceed the Unified Development Ordinance allowance (typically calculated as 1 square foot per linear foot of frontage) but are intended to provide signage scaled to the building and site conditions. Orin Robinson of Victor Sign Company told the board the store sits approximately 400 feet from the Highway 90 centerline, which makes current allowable signage hard to see.
The board moved to approve the variance; Chris Hollis made the motion and Brian Hinkel seconded. The vote was recorded 7–0 in favor (Heather Wiggins, Jerry Jackson, Beverly Cook, Chris Hollis, Jared Ladner, Brian Hinkel and Jared Crocker voting “aye”). The Planning Board will forward the recommendation to City Council.
